Commissioning Our Global Leadership Residents to Plant a Reproducing Church

Last week I had the opportunity to commission our Global Leadership Residents at our Yellow Box Location.

These residents are planting a reproducing church in Johannesburg, South Africa, early next year.

Over the course of their 6 months in Chicago, we have become great friends. We have had dozens of conversations about cross culture ministry, church planting, and the global church. I have learned much from them.

Their courage to come to the US, their faith to pursue God’s call on their life, and resolve to plant a network of reproducing churches has inspired me.

And now, I can’t wait to see what God will do through them.

Thank you to all of the people at NewThing and Community that helped make this possible! It was truly a TEAM effort.

Do me a favor and add Charles, Chero, and Justin to your prayer list. They are starting a new thing after all!

Jon has a vision to add value to church planters. That’s it.

And I love it.

There are thee reasons to subscribe:

1) Jon has great content. He is the lead pastor of Mission Church. He did a leadership residency at Community and planted a new church that’s got a big vision to reach people and plant churches. He has a great heart for church planters.

2) Taking Flight is powered by NewThing because like Jon, we want to help fuel what God has called you to do in your local context. One of the ways we can do that is to present great content to you.  Jon’s got great content.

3) NewThing Lead Visionary Dave Ferguson is Jon’s first guest.

God is always doing new things…

Don’t be Discouraged

Chances are if you’re trying to start new things for the Kingdom, you will face resistance. After all, Jesus warned us of in the parable of the Sower:

3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”No matter how barren or rocky the spiritual soil in your community or city is, God is capable bring new things to life (Mark 4:3-8).

We should listen to Jesus

I direct NewThing, a catalyst for movements of reproducing churches. We take our name from Isaiah 43:18-19:

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Do you see it? Life springs from the desert, see, I am doing a new thing!

We forget that God has a penchant for creating; that he’s a God who very much loves the new and the vanguard. He created creation and that doesn’t mean he’s done.

The beautiful part of the story is that we are called to join with him in this great endeavor.

As we plant new churches, God creates life. The kingdom of God advances. The kingdom is alive and dynamic and all of us are called to start new communities.

The more gathering of people in the name of Jesus the more the Kingdom advances. Ours is a more game. God wants us to go deep of course, but not at the expense of going wide.

Movement will achieve the Jesus Mission. We can see movement if we take our responsibility to plant more churches seriously.

The truth is, we can all do something to help start new churches. And when we do we get the privilege of joining Him in his mission to set everything right again.

Where is God growing new things around you? What are you doing to cultivate them?

Church planting is not optional!

Church Planting = Movement

In all the places where Christianity is thriving church planting is a priority.

I’ve heard from leaders in India, Africa, and even China and they’ve told me that church planting is foundational to their movement. Leaders in these places take their call to plant new churches seriously.

Yet in North America, we have not seen any significant church planting movements emerge in recent decades.

This is not due to lack of resources. We have great leadership training platforms and lots of resources; we have great models and systems. There are conferences and workshops and organizations that offer all the tools we need to plant churches.

So, what is stopping the North American church from planting more churches? Continue reading “Church planting is not optional!”

A new church means a new story

I am stoked!

Ted Coniaris, Downers Grove Information Meeting February 26, 2017

I attended our Downers Grove information meeting yesterday. It was a great opportunity to get people into the room and tell them about the start of a new church in Downers Grove in January of 2018.

As Ted Coniaris (the campus pastor of Downers Grove) spoke, I was reminded about how wonderful a new church really is. I have attended dozens of information meetings about new churches. And every time, I am reminded that the start of a new church is the start of a new story.

Not just any kind of story – it’s a story that God has been writing since the dawn of time and it’s a story that He will continue to write. When you say yes to starting or being part of a church plant, you are saying yes to a new thing that God is doing in that community. It’s the start of a new story for that community.

Think about the implications of this: how often do you get to start something that will change people’s eternities? When you are part of a new church you truly do get a front row seat to see God do His thing. You get to be part of changing lives and possibly generations because when someone finds their way back to God the transformation reverberates out to their family, friends, neighbors, community and even the world. This is how we restore things to the way God intended them to be.

Oh yeah – there is one other reason to join a church plant. This will be an opportunity for God to do a new thing in your life. Mission gives life and the more you’re willing to be part of what God is doing, the more opportunity you give him to renew and refine you. It’s truly an opportunity for God to write the next chapter of your story.
